ClearCase: Enabling Setuid Execution on UNIX

Posted by: Tamir in: ● March 12, 2010

Yesterday I was introduced to ClearCase internal script that I didn’ t know before. This script enables the MVFS setuid for VOBs and it helps on a situation where the VOBs storage filesystem is “setuid enabled”, but the VOBs on that filesystems are under “nosetuid” (setuid disabled). Lastly I found the reason and solution in the ClearCase admin manual (V2003.06), not in Google.

Since I didn’t find any refenrence to that script in Google, I give here the explanation I found in the manual, to share it with the others who might encounter a similar problem:

“By default, the viewroot and VOB file systems are mounted with setuid and setgid disabled; this is the recommended configuration. If you must enable hosts to mount these file systems with setuid and setgid enabled (for example, if you run setuid tools from a VOB), you can either configure your release area with the site_prep script to

make this the default for all hosts, or you can run ccase-home-dir/etc/utils/change_suid_mounts to enable it for a single host.

The effects of running change_suid_mounts on a host do not persist across installs, and you must stop and restart ClearCase on the host after running the script. For more information, see the discussion of site_prep in the Installation Guide.”

Microsoft buys bridge for Java, .Net developers

Posted by: Tamir in: ● November 12, 2009

InfoWorld reports that Microsoft is acquiring SourceGear’’s Teamprise suite, which lets Java developers build applications via Visual Studio TFS.

Microsoft’s move is in recognition of heterogeneous development shops building in both .Net and Java.

It seems that Microsoft is putting significant efforts into keeping up with its competitors.

Functionality from Teamprise Client Suite will be integrated into Microsoft’s Visual Studio product line beginning with the Visual Studio 2010 IDE.

ClearCase performance enhancements – A new white paper

Posted by: Tamir in: ● August 26, 2009

A new white paper concerning performance enhancements for ClearCase registry server was released a few days ago by IBM.
It deals with improvements of daily clearcase commands in ClearCase 7.1, 7.0 and CCRC.
It seems that IBM Rational has really improved ClearCase performance, particularly in following clearcase actions: make streams, create activities, checkin and checkout, lshistory, update snapshot view and remove view.

The best part is that you don’t have to customize your environment to achieve these improvements – just upgrade to ClearCase 7.1 or ClearCase 7.0.1.2 . Indeed, upgrading an environment is always a “pain”, but you are probably planning to do so sometime in the future.

Here is the white paper.

Posted by: Tamir in: ● August 25, 2009

I’m looking forward for it.  Are you?

I was told by Rational Support that its ClearCase, ClearQuest and other Rational suits are planned to support Windows 7 at the beginning of 2010, after their general release and test/validation results.

Stay tuned.

Twitter and CM / ALM systems

Posted by: Tamir in: ● July 17, 2009

I find this interesting:

In a random glance in Twitter during the last couple of days, it seems like twitters who mention CM and ALM tools actually complain and express their dissatisfaction of it. Could Twitter be their therapy?

Have a guess which system is the top of the bitching list?    (Clue: we simplify and automate it :-) )

Have a look yourself – read the last twits of these users:

As you probably know, there is no way in ClearCase to know when baselines are being recommended. If you’ve ever wanted to know it just as it happens, you can take a brand new trigger that I developed the last week, as part of our work @ GoMidjets.

What benefits you can achieve by using this trigger?

  • Sending automatic emails to relevant people. For instance, let’s say you’re a configuration manager or a team leader and you want all your developers to receive Emails about the new recommended baselines just as you recommend it, in order to let them rebase to the recommended baseline ASAP.
  • Saving the history of recommended baselines. ClearCase does not enable you track the recommended baselines during timeline. This benefit has even more benefits:
    • If you want to rollback to the recommended baseline of yesterday or two weeks ago – you can’t do that unless you save its history.
    • Create a new stream by a previous recommended BL.
    • Automatically comparing recommended BL and the previous rec. BL (this benefit will be ready soon as part of our new version of CompBL)
    • Knowing the baselines which considered as recommended.

Subscribe here to get updates about this trigger.
